Gypsy

Conceptual Project, 2022

The design for this ‘Gypsy’ set was born from a desire to deconstruct what can very easily be a large show to it’s bare bones, whilst still retaining clever tricks and strong audience visuals. As an exercise, I kept the budget small and the restraints tight, opting for a smaller production feel.

The challenge when approaching ‘Gypsy’ was to show the passing of time, character situation and economic standing. This was achieved by using a singular structure, the ‘arch’, and simply revealing it dressed in three ways throughout the show.

This structure is also integral to the final reveal, in which both the arch and the stage flats will light up together to create a stunning ‘rags to riches’ backdrop.

Simple line drawings to work out placement and feel in the space.

The curtain will change at three points throughout the show, showing clearly the change in time, economical situation and following the story.

The final reveal will see both arches light up, the rough and ready wood panels and the deep red velvet stage curtain, demonstrating the rags to riches journey of Gypsy Rose.

My final box model for Gypsy set. To create this, I used a mixture of EVA foam, wooden lolly pop sticks and matchsticks.

My initial sketch model to aid with ideation. This was made using painted EVA foam and MDF board.
